Tazumal
Archaeological site of Tazumal in Chalchuapa is considered the most important in El Salvador. The main monument is this 12 meters (39 feet) high step pyramid. Visitor, used to see stone constructions (such as in Guatemala or Honduras), will be very surprised, that Salvadorean restorers (as we will see, not only in Tazumal) reconstruct pyramides out of concrete. The most important Mayan monument then looks like an attraction in a Soviet high-rise neighbourhood. I agree that even pyramids in Copán or Tikal are probably not all original, but replacing thousand-years old buildings with concrete replicas is a strong local cultural specialty..
