Construction of Kaliningrad city hall

Unfinished construction of Kaliningrad city hall

A modern symbol of the city, a monument of socialist architecture. A medieval castle used to stand on this place. The Communists demolished it in the 1970s to clear space for a new city hall. The new building, however, was too heavy and it started to collapse. The unusable construction is now empty. Municipal authorities are considering ways to demolish it.

Pre-war pictures of the castle and city are available in a collection of historical postcards. You may also take a look into a private gallery with post-war pictures.
