If somebody had asked me in July 2004, where I would like to go on vacation, I would certainly not have named Guatemala. News coming from this country to Europe are not very encouraging. Just look what the U.S. State Department or the U.S. Embassy write and a traveler used to a peaceful Romania or Armenia gets an impression, that he should choose a different place.

However, things were to be different. My employer sent me on a business trip to Guatemala City in August 2004. It was planned for three weeks, but I immediately requested another week of vacations. Worries notwithstanding, a trip to Guatemala comes once in a lifetime and I have to take advantage - even if I had to spend the week with an organized tour.

I am back at home now and recall all the wonderful experiences, which I have gone through over the four weeks. I did not believe before departure, that I would see as many interesting places and meet such friendly and helpful people. I am dedicating this presentation to them.

On the following pages you will find an overview of preparations, a travelogue and a photo gallery. Train enghusiasts can read about a cargo train ride from Guatemala City to the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy the reading - and if it inspires you to visit this country, you will not regret this decision.
