Castillo de San Felipe

Castillo de San Felipe

Castillo de San Felipe is a Spanish castle in the narrowest point of the Rio Dulce, right before Lake Izabal. It protected Spanish colonies against pirates and foreign powers. It was preserved without much damage and now is accessible to the public (tourists can claim to the top and view the landscape or swim on a nearby beach; there is no furniture inside).

There are more pictures with short history overview on Maya Paradise and Guatemala on the Web websites. A similar, but bigger Fortaleza de San Fernando de Omoa is located in Honduras.
