Puerto San José used to be an important port on the Pacific coast. A railway from Guatemala City reached it in 1884. Nowadays, the port has moved to the nearby Puerto Quetzal and the railway has been abandoned at least since 1996. Tracks are missing on several places. If the operation should ever resume, it would be first needed to evict a long row of stores and merchant´s stands, built in the city right on the tracks. This is however not likely, as the freight harbour will never come back (see next picture) and passenger trains could not compete with buses in Guatemala.
